Just like everyone else in the working world, attorneys have some aspects of their jobs that they aren’t fond of. Even though many attorneys maintain a passion and thrill for the law, there are a few things that many lawyers wish their clients would just stop doing. We have compiled a few of them here for you:
- You aren’t honest with your lawyer. If you want your attorneys to be able to do their job to the best of their ability, they need to know all the facts, even if you aren’t proud of some of them. Lawyers aren’t interested in judging you or your character; they want to give you the best representation possible.
- Confusing billable hours with hourly wage. Even attorneys understand why you might blanche a little at the sight of your bills. However, attorneys aren’t paid per hour. When we charge billable hours, that is a rate the firm is charging; that rate per hour doesn’t go directly into our pockets.
- Asking for free advice. We get it– legal advice is pricey! However, just like you enjoy a little down time away from your job, attorneys also like to take a break and leave work at the office for a night. Additionally, being a lawyer is hard work that requires years of study and preparation, and our expertise deserves compensation.
While lawyer jokes might abound, most attorneys want to fight for their clients and get the best results for them. Keeping these little things in mind can help you get the most from your relationship with your lawyer.
